The New Squidbeak Splatoon is the series' answer to the question of who, in a city of teenagers playing Turf War, is actually keeping watch. It is the successor to the Squidbeak Splatoon, the Inkling unit Craig Cuttlefish served in during the Great Turf War, and for most of a century it consisted of Cuttlefish alone, camped in a shack above Octo Valley with a radio.
He recruits by accident. Agent 3 followed him down a manhole. Agent 4 wandered past Marie in Octo Canyon. Agent 8 woke up beside him in the dark of the Deepsea Metro. The new Agent 3 walked up to the Crater outside Splatsville. His granddaughters Callie and Marie, the Squid Sisters, serve as Agents 1 and 2, their idol careers doubling as cover. The squad's equipment comes from Sheldon, its music comes from whichever idols are on the radio, and its mission has changed with every game: rescue the Great Zapfish, rescue Callie, escape Kamabo Co., stop the Return of the Mammalians.
By Splatoon 3 the squad has a proper base camp in Alterna, the original Agent 3 has become its Captain, and a Smallfry has joined the roster as Little Buddy. The New Squidbeak Splatoon never gets credit. Inkopolis and Splatsville go on painting the floor, and the agents go back to Turf War when the job is done. That is, the games suggest, exactly the point.
