Marie

Marie is the quiet one, which in Splatoon means the one with the best lines. Alongside her cousin Callie she forms the Squid Sisters, Inkopolis's first idol duo, and behind the news desk she is Agent 2 of her grandfather's New Squidbeak Splatoon. Her color is green, her tentacles are worn in a bow, and her default expression is faint amusement at everyone around her.

The Splatfest

The final Splatfest of Splatoon 1 pitted the Sisters against each other, and Marie won. In-universe it was a bittersweet victory. The cousins drifted; Callie disappeared. When Splatoon 2 opens, Marie is alone in Octo Canyon with a parasol and a Hero Charger, and the first Inkling to wander past gets drafted as Agent 4.

Octo Canyon

Marie's running commentary through Splatoon 2's story mode is some of the sharpest writing in the series: worried, sardonic, and increasingly tender as she realizes what Octavio has done to her cousin. The climax belongs to her. From above the Octobot King, Marie lines up her charger and shoots the Hypnoshades clean off Callie's face. It is the single most decisive act any idol has taken, and she does it without a speech.

Agent 2

In Splatoon 3, Marie returns to the field alongside Callie, and her dynamic with the new Agent 3 and the sanitized-and-recovered original Agent 3 (now the Captain) is one of the game's pleasures. She is the strategist of the team, the one who reads the Alterna Logs aloud and keeps Cuttlefish from wandering off. She also gets the last word on most things.

Character

Marie's humor is deadpan and her affection is understated, which makes it hit harder when it surfaces. She is skeptical of hype, protective of her family, and quietly proud of being the better shot. The fandom's long-running "Marie is best" affection began with that Splatfest and has never really ended. She would, one suspects, find that mildly embarrassing and entirely correct.
