Craig Cuttlefish, veteran of the Great Turf War, grandfather of the Squid Sisters, and the old squid who has recruited every agent in the series. Rival and, perhaps, old friend of DJ Octavio.

Craig Cuttlefish is the memory of the Inkling world. A hundred years ago he fought in the Great Turf War as a young soldier in the Squidbeak Splatoon, and he never stopped. While Inkopolis forgot the Octarians existed, Cuttlefish set up a shack above Octo Valley, kept a radio, and waited. When the Great Zapfish vanished in Splatoon 1, he was the only one who knew where to look, and he drafted the first Inkling who followed him down the manhole as Agent 3.

The Cap'n

Cuttlefish is doddering, forgetful, and prone to calling everyone "bucko," and none of that should be mistaken for weakness. He commands the New Squidbeak Splatoon with real authority, his granddaughters Callie and Marie serving as Agents 1 and 2, and his instincts are consistently right. It was his radio that patched the Calamari Inkantation into the Octavio fight. He wanders off on his own investigations constantly, which is how he ends up in the Deepsea Metro beside Agent 8 in the Octo Expansion, and how he gets kidnapped by Mr. Grizz in Splatoon 3.

Octavio

The relationship between Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio is the oldest in the series. They were enemies in the war, and their exchanges in every game since have the rhythm of two old men who have been arguing for a century. The Sunken Scrolls and later dialogue imply they knew each other before the fighting started, and fans have long read them as former comrades. Splatoon 3 puts them side by side against Grizz, bickering the whole way.

Dried

In Return of the Mammalians, Grizz captures Cuttlefish and dries him into a shriveled husk to keep him out of the way. The agents find and rehydrate him. He is, characteristically, more annoyed than traumatized. By the end of the game he has handed command of the squad to the original Agent 3, now the Captain, and settled into the role of elder statesman.

Character

Cuttlefish is a joke and a hero at once, which is the series' favorite combination. He is the only Inkling who remembers what the war cost, and he spent a hundred years making sure nobody would have to fight it again. His granddaughters got his stubbornness and his ear for a good song.
