The laconic sea urchin who lounged in an Inkopolis Plaza alley, rerolling gear abilities for Super Sea Snails and sourcing rare items for a price.
Spyke is a sea urchin in a tracksuit, permanently reclined in an alley off Inkopolis Plaza, and he is the gray market of Splatoon 1. For a Super Sea Snail, the currency earned at Splatfests, he would reroll the abilities on a piece of gear. For a stack of cash he would order in gear worn by other players seen in the plaza. He never got up. He barely opened his eyes.
The hustler
Spyke's dialogue is minimal, drawled, and faintly menacing in a way the game plays for laughs. He calls the player "love," treats every transaction as a favor, and clearly knows more about the city's gear economy than any shopkeeper. Fans have theorized about his sources; the game never explains where the rerolled abilities come from.
After Splatoon 1
Spyke does not appear in Inkopolis Square. His role is taken by Murch, a younger sea urchin whose relationship to Spyke has been the subject of speculation ever since, with the games hinting that Murch grew up in Spyke's shadow without spelling out the connection. Spyke himself surfaces in Splatoon 3's return to Inkopolis Plaza, still in his alley, still unbothered.
Character
Spyke is the series' first taste of Inkopolis's underside: not dangerous exactly, but unofficial. He represents the part of the city that runs on favors and snails rather than the bright shopfronts, and his sheer inertia made him a fan favorite. He would find that flattering, if he could be bothered. His signature service, rerolling gear for Super Sea Snails, also tied him directly to the Splatfests: the snails were the reward for participating, which made Spyke the reason many players cared about the results at all.
